Anyways, aesthetically, this game looks beautiful. Even the Training Stage has character because your in the Kyokugen Dojo! Awesome. It’s that kind of atmosphere that this game creates on a numerous array of stages, and it gives purpose to their being a stage select. However, they add an Echo filter to this stage and the sound files used in the fight and suddenly everything echo’s and there is minimal music, the background is suddenly noticeable and very, very awesome. I mean, one of the stages is basically a white background. KOF’s stages do that, and I praise them for it. I want stages to express something, but subtly.
I wish on Street Fighter 4, there were more variety in Stage material, like, not even particularly “interesting ones” with tonnes of stuff going on in the background. This game has like… relative atmosphere in it’s backgrounds, and that’s really cool. Fit the aesthetic of the game perfectly, Capcom could learn a lot from this, rather than “Hurr Durr Jurassic Area Research Facility”. On the subject of the backdrops – jesus, they are really nice. Sprites have never looked so fluid – with lighting changes from the backgrounds is an extremely nice polish. A Brief Review of KOF XIIIįirst experiences with it last weekend and it was amazing.
I’d been wanting to play this for a long time now as I heard it was a lot like Capcom VS SNK 2 and the EVO 2012 exhibition of KOFXIII was some of the best gameplay that year – despite me knowing very little about the system mechanics and processes involved in SNK games overall. Lots of fun, messing with a new fighting game. Review copy of game provided by publisher.I do not have much experience with SNK Games at all, so it’s been interesting to attempt to figure it all out. If you’re into fighting games and have yet to try out KOF, you should definitely check out the Steam Edition. I can’t suggest KOFXIII enough for fighter fans and this is the version to get with the improved netcode and the three DLC characters included in an already massive package.

This brings the already massive roster up to a whopping 36 characters.Īs far as display and visual controls for the PC go, it’s a bit bare bones, but it really isn’t as necessary for this game. These include fire-based Iori Yagami, Mr. The second addition is the inclusion of the three downloadable characters that were offered later on for the console version. It would have been nice to have seen that added to the Steam Edition, but alas, it is still missing in action. The one thing that still bugs me is the lack of a spectator mode. Every once in a while, a one second lag may crop up, but it never broke the match. In the 30 or so matches I played online, I had zero laggy matches. Granted, it was patched and became much smoother, but here, it is great right out of the gate.
When KOFXIII first hit the consoles, it was a bit of a mess in terms of online play. First of all, the netcode has been seriously improved. Everything from the console version is here, but there are a few new things that need to be mentioned. Of course, that’s not what people want to hear. The full customization of characters’ color palette is also here and still very deep. The story mode is still here, complete with the frustratingly impossible boss fight. They explain everything easily and can help newcomers ease into their experience. The training mode, tutorial and mission modes will help players learn the essentials and some helpful combos. Now, it’s getting a new release on the PC with The King of Fighters XIII: Steam Edition and I have to say, this is the version to get.įor a more in-depth look at the mechanics of the game, take a look at my original review of the console version right here.Īll the bells and whistles of the console release are here. Needless to say, it was and still is a big hit. Since my review, KOFXIII has gone on to be highly watched and played, even making consecutive returns to the EVO Fighting Game Tournament. Even back then, I could see it was a fantastic fighting game that had a lot going for it.
It’s been nearly two years since I played The King of Fighters XIII on the Xbox 360.
